The Last Party

DC Morgan - Book 1

What’s it like to be so disliked that when you are killed, nearly everyone you knew could have done it?

That’s Rhys Lloyd. He’s a local boy done good turned has been who has seemingly always been a manipulator. Over the 432 pages, 13 hours and 16 minutes if you are listening to the audiobook, you learn just how much the village and people who knew Rhys disliked him.

The characters in this story are flawed and wonderful, but be warned there are MANY. This series is about DC Morgan and it starts out with a bang in the beginning with her. We learn her backstory, about her family, and how she became an officer. Because there are so many characters, you might think that a lot go undeveloped. That is not the case, remember there’s 432 pages. There is a fisherman, a former boxer, an influencer, and a brothel owner, just to name a few.  I lost track of a few but they came back and all was not lost.

There are so many rich societal and socioeconomic themes running through you’d think that it would feel like a lecture, but it doesn’t.

I’m curious where this series is going. DC Morgan is bit of a lone ranger and fiery (did I mention she has red hair). She grew up on the patch she is now protecting which can make things a bit complicated.

I hope that the second book doesn’t feel the need to pack so much into it. A couple of rich themes well done and not the whole kit and caboodle would be nice.

Overall, a well written, twisty-turny mystery thriller set in Wales.

Happy Reading!

Plot Summary

By morning, all of them are suspects.

It's a party to end all parties, but not everyone is here to celebrate.

On New Year’s Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests. His vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he’s generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbors.

But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.

On New Year’s Day, Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects. The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbors, friends and family—and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.

With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn’t who wanted Rhys dead…but who finally killed him.

In a village with this many secrets, murder is just the beginning.
