Pan de muerto ... ex-husband detective ... and a murder

Rita is coming off a very difficult time, a new city, divorce, new job, and now murder. To complicate  things, Manny, Rita’s ex-husband is a detective and gets called in to investigate the murder. Add to the mix a sleuthing boss and sulky teen daughter, the last thing Rita is thinking about is handsome lawyer Jake.

Got all that? This story started fast and kept going. I really disliked Manny, but I think that was intentional. One thing though, thought this was the first book but there were several references to past snoops. It was hard to tell if it was meant to just provide background or there was a book before.

Flori is a hoot. Very sassy. Like Rita I wish I had Flori’s energy. I know a little about Pan de Muerto and from the descriptions, would have liked to try Flori’s. Flori’s daughter are strong and independent, good reflections of their mom. Flori is hilarious in how she encouraged Rita to pinch Jake’s rear.

Rita has a cool bestie and has struggled to remember her worth after her difficult few months. It has not been easy with Manny’s pettiness and meanness dogging her. Detective Bonnie is a good contrast to him. While she doesn’t want Rita and Flori investigating, she also doesn’t disregard and belittle them.

The suicide was not believed by those who knew Victor. As Flori and Rita run through the suspects, they feel like they are running out of them. Rita did bumble a couple of things but the story was good and fun.

I am looking forward to what is next for Rita, Flori and crew.

Happy Reading!
